Your pre-trip vaccine timeline: when to book before you fly.
Most travel vaccines require weeks — some even months — to take full effect. Here's exactly when to come in before your departure date.
Planning a trip abroad is exciting. But when it comes to travel health, timing is everything. Many vaccines require two or more doses spaced weeks apart, and most need several weeks after the final dose to reach full effectiveness. Leaving this to the last minute can leave you unprotected for the very start of your trip.
8 weeks or more before departure is the gold standard for booking a travel health consultation. This window gives your body time to respond to multi-dose series like Hepatitis B (three doses over six months, though an accelerated two-month schedule exists) and allows us to address any prescriptions for antimalarials that need to be started before you arrive at your destination.
4–6 weeks before is still enough time for most common travel vaccines — Hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus boosters can all be handled in this window. Single-dose vaccines like the combined Hepatitis A/B accelerated schedule, Japanese encephalitis, and rabies (if applicable) can be started here, though some will need follow-up doses after you return.
2 weeks before is the minimum for many vaccines to be considered effective. If you're booking a last-minute trip, don't skip the consultation — you may still be able to get meaningful protection, and we can advise on what to prioritize given your itinerary.
The day before or day of travel — we won't turn you away. Even at the last minute, a single dose of Hepatitis A vaccine provides immediate partial protection, and we can still fill antimalarial prescriptions and provide counselling on safe food, water, and insect precautions.
A Quick Reference Timeline
- ✓8+ weeks out — ideal booking window; handles multi-dose series comfortably
- ✓4–6 weeks out — sufficient for most single-dose and dual-dose vaccines
- ✓2–4 weeks out — still worthwhile; partial protection is better than none
- ✓Under 2 weeks — call us immediately; we'll prioritize what matters most
- ✓Same day — come in; partial protection and safety counselling are still valuable
Every destination is different. Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and South Asia all carry distinct risks. Our travel health pharmacists are trained to assess your specific itinerary — including the regions you're visiting, the type of travel, and the activities you're planning — and recommend accordingly.
The bottom line: book your travel consultation as early as you can, ideally 8 weeks out. If your trip is coming up sooner, call us regardless — we'll do everything we can to get you protected before you board.
