Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions.

Yes. Ontario pharmacists are authorized to prescribe cessation medications including varenicline (Champix) as part of expanded scope of practice. Patients can receive medication the same day without a physician appointment.

Champix is a prescription medication that blocks nicotine receptors in the brain, reducing the pleasurable effects of smoking and decreasing withdrawal symptoms and cravings. It is typically taken over 12 weeks with a gradual dose increase.

We carry nicotine patches in multiple strengths, nicotine gum (2 mg and 4 mg), nicotine lozenges, and nicotine mouth spray. Products can be used alone or in combination based on your smoking patterns.

ODB provides coverage for eligible patients, potentially eliminating out-of-pocket costs. Many private plans also cover cessation medications. Call us for an individual coverage assessment.

No. Our counselling is free. The Smoke-Free Ontario program provides free NRT — up to 26 weeks of patches, gum, or lozenges — for eligible patients.

Absolutely. Multiple quit attempts are common with nicotine dependence. Combining medication with pharmacist behavioural support significantly improves success rates compared to going cold turkey. Each attempt teaches you something — we'll build on it.

Most plans last 12 weeks. Champix involves setting a quit date within the first two weeks of treatment. NRT courses typically run 8–12 weeks. Some patients benefit from extended lower-dose therapy.
