Pharmacists Can Do More Than Flu Shots

Ontario pharmacists are authorized to administer a much wider range of vaccines than most people realize — often without needing an appointment with your family doctor at all. Here's a rundown of what's available at Tartan Pharmacy beyond flu and COVID-19.

Shingles (Shingrix)

Recommended for adults 50 and older, Shingrix is given as two doses, 2–6 months apart, and is highly effective at preventing shingles and the chronic nerve pain (postherpetic neuralgia) that can follow it. If you've had chickenpox — and most adults have — you carry the virus that causes shingles, whether or not you remember getting it.

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Protects against pneumococcal pneumonia, a leading cause of hospitalization in older adults. Recommended for adults 65+, and for younger adults with certain chronic conditions (diabetes, heart or lung disease, immunocompromise).

Hepatitis A & B

Recommended for travellers to many destinations, people with certain occupational exposures, and anyone wanting long-term protection. Often combined into a single vaccine series.

HPV Vaccine

Protects against the strains of HPV responsible for most cervical, throat, and other cancers. Recommended in childhood but valuable for adults up to 45 who missed it earlier.

Meningococcal Vaccine

Recommended for teens, university students in residence, and travellers to certain regions where meningococcal disease is more common.

Routine & Catch-Up Vaccines

Tetanus-diphtheria boosters (recommended every 10 years), and catch-up doses for anyone whose childhood immunization record has a gap — new to Canada, missed a dose, or simply unsure. We can review your record and fill in what's missing.

How to Book

Most of these can be given as a same-visit walk-in, subject to stock. For a guaranteed time slot, book online or call 613-823-8030 — our pharmacist will confirm which vaccines are right for your age, health history, and travel plans before you come in.
